  5. 0: If you unpacked this package from a IBM-PC version, you will need to run
  6.    the "pc2unix.sh" shell program. This program removes the "<CR>" characters
  7.    from the text files, and moves the the tamil font files to the
  8.    correct directory. First, you will need to remove the "<CR>" character
  9.    from the pc2unix.sh program itself, the first few lines of the file
  10.    pc2unix.sh provide some help in doing that.
  11.    Once pc2unix.sh is rid of its <CR> characters, you can run it, and
  12.    remove the <CR> character from all the text files.
  13.    Use this command to run the program:
  14.    $ sh pc2unix.sh
  15.  
  16. 1: Make and install all the programs.
  17.    Change directory to "src", and 
  18.    edit the Makefile as required, run make first, then install the
  19.    files.
  20.  
  21.    $ make        # or, $ make noansi
  22.    $ make install
  23.  
  24.    If the make in the src directory fails (due to a non-ansi compiler),
  25.    you will need to re-edit the makefile (in some cases, even the sources)
  26.    to get it to compile.
  27.    Note that an ANSI-C compiler is assumed, if you do not have one,
  28.    follow the directions given in the Makefile; make the "noansi"
  29.    object.

  31. 2: Set up the environment variables required.
  32.    The environment variable ITRANSPATH must be set to the directory
  33.    where the files *.ifm, *.afm, *.tfm reside.
  34.    In my case, I have this line in my .profile:

  36.    ITRANSPATH=/usr1/avinash/ITRANS/lib;export ITRANSPATH
  37.  
  38.    See the file named "shenv"  in the lib directory, for all the
  39.    variables that need to be set.
  40.  
  41.    Edit the file bin/prips, and set the directory path names there
  42.    to correct values.
  43.  
  44.    Add the itrans bin path to your PATH environment variable, so that the
  45.    commands "itrans" and "prips" can be found.
  46.  
  47. *** If you intend to use itrans for directly producing PostScript
  48.    output,  you are all set at this point.
  49.    Example usage:
  50.    Assuming your input file is named hindi.ips, the command to print
  51.    it would be:
  52.  
  53.    # cd to the doc directory
  54.    $ itrans -P -i hindi.ips -o hindi.ps
  55.    $ cat ../lib/devnac.ps ../lib/itrans.pro hindi.ps | lp
  56.    # above assumes lp sends data to a PostScript printer
  57.  
  58.    Instead of specifying all the three files to cat, you may use the
  59.    prips command---is present in the bin directory of the itrans
  60.    package. (It is a shell file---you will have to edit it to set the
  61.    correct directory path).
  62.    In that case, the commands are simplified to:

  64.    $ itrans -P -i hindi.ips -o hindi.ps
  65.    $ prips hindi.ps
  66.  
  67.    The user manual document (idoc.itx) is written in TeX, but, a
  68.    PostScript file is also provided (idoc.ps).
  69.    Print out the PostScript file directly if you do not wish go thru
  70.    setting up all the files needed for a TeX setup.
  71.    (The file is in the doc directory.)
  72.    The transliteration map for devanagari is again in TeX (devn.itx),
  73.    the PostScript file is (devn.ps).
  74.    The transliteration map for tamil is in TeX (tamil.itx),
  75.    the PostScript file is (tamil.ps).

  77.    Use the PostScript files only if you are impatient, you should
  78.    eventually remove them since they take up too much space, and can
  79.    always be regenerated from the source files by a fully installed
  80.    itrans.

  82. *** To use the system with the TeX  language, you need to setup the files
  83.    and fonts so that TeX/LaTeX and dvips can locate them.
  84.    The following steps are necessary.
  85.  
  86. 3:
  87.    The files mentioned in this section all reside in the lib directory
  88.    (or, in the TFMDIR directory, if set differently in the Makefile),
  89.    of this itrans package.
  90.  
  91.    For devanagari support, add the following lines to the system file
  92.    psfonts.map:

  98. dnhre     Devnagari-BoldExpanded <devnac.ps "/DevnacPlain 1.2 ExtendFont"

  101.    psfonts.map will reside in some system area, you will have to search
  102.    around for it (TeX system areas). If that file is not
  103.    editable by you, copy the file into your current directory, make
  104.    it writable, and then add the four lines mentioned above to it.
  105.    In this case, psfonts.map must reside in the current directory,
  106.    whenever you run the program "dvips".
  107.    (Current versions of dvips make use of a single psfonts.map, so this
  108.     ungainly approach has to be followed...)

  110. 4: If you installed the file "devnac.ps" in some non-standard place
  111.    (with respect to your system's dvips installation),
  112.    add the pathname to the line starting with "H" in the file .dvipsrc.
  113.    (Create the file .dvipsrc in your home  directory, if you don't have it,
  114.    see man page on dvips and its user manual.)
  115.    The line looks something like:

  122. 5: Install the .tfm files in the standard place, or, if that is not
  123.    desirable, install it any directory, just append the directory pathname
  124.    to the environment variable TEXFONTS.
  125.    e.g, $ TEXFONTS=$TEXFONTS:<your-directory> ; export TEXFONTS
  126.  
  127.    For Tamil support, install the .mf files and the .pk files also, in
  128.    the standard places.
  129.  
  130.    Note that you must have the dvips version that handles PostScript fonts.
  131.    (Tomas Rokicki's version 5.41 or newer, see the FAQ in
  132.     comp.text.tex for more information.)

  134. *** You are all set up now for both TeX/LaTeX and PostScript output
  135.    generation.
  136.  
  137. 6: Print out the document idoc.itx, it is the user's manual
  138.    for the "itrans" program.
  139.    idoc.itx contains transliterated hindi/tamil text, so it has to be
  140.    converted to a normal TeX file.
  141.    Run these commands:
  142.    $ itrans -i idoc.itx -o idoc.tex
  143.    $ latex idoc
  144.    $ dvips idoc | lp
  145.    # above assumes lp sends data to a PostScript printer
  146.  
  147.    Do the same for the reference manuals, devn.itx and tamil.itx.
  148.  
  149. 7: Check out the sample data, print out the sample files provided.
  150.    Use the above examples given to print the files.
  151.    Files ending in .itx are TeX/LaTeX files, and files ending in .ips are
  152.    PostScript files meant for the dumb interface of itrans.
  153.    Follow the appropriate command sequences mentioned in this document to
  154.    print out the files.

  156. 8: If you need to use the Frans Velthuis's Devnag font, you have to
  157.    get it by anonymous FTP---see details in the file dvng.itx.
  158.    Once you get it, install the TFM and PK files as would for any
  159.    other Metafont font on your system.
